About Us (TOP) A Folksmarch is a non-competitive walking event conducted monthly for people of all ages and abilities here in Central New York. Folksmarching began in October 1981 under the leadership of the YMCA of Greater Syracuse and has been conducted every month since then. It began as an Americanization of the European "Volksmarche", or people's walk. Folksmarches are generally held on the second weekend every month. Walk anytime between 8 am and 11 am on Saturday, and from 1 to 3 pm on Sunday of the event. Participants walk at their own pace, and the purpose is strictly for fun, fellowship and exercise. The route distances are a choice of either 5K (3.1 miles) or 10K (6.2 miles). Routes vary at each location, but normally include a combination of paved walkways and natural settings. Routes are marked and a map is provided to each walker. The fee for each adult is $3.50. Childrens fee is $1.00 and the maximum for families is $9.00. Each walker receives a commemorative pin depicting a symbol or image of that months location. For those doing a Folksmarch for the first time, the normal $3.50 fee is waived. A passport may be purchased for $2.00, and can be used to track the locations visited and total miles completed. The passport enrolls the individual on a monthly mailing list to learn the specific details about all future Folksmarches in the Central New York area. This Month's Walk (TOP) |
