March Event

About Us

A Folksmarch is a non-competitive walking event conducted monthly for people of all ages and abilities here in Central New York. Folksmarching began in October 1981 under the leadership of the YMCA of Greater Syracuse and has been conducted every month since then. It began as an Americanization of the European "Volksmarche", or people's walk.

Folksmarches are generally held on the second weekend every month. Walk anytime between 8 am and 11 am on Saturday, and from 1 to 3 pm on Sunday of the event. Participants walk at their own pace, and the purpose is strictly for fun, fellowship and exercise. The route distances are a choice of either 5K (3.1 miles) or 10K (6.2 miles). Routes vary at each location, but normally include a combination of paved walkways and natural settings. Routes are marked and a map is provided to each walker.  A shorter modified route is always available to those who choose not to walk the longer distances.

One announcement from Elaine are “Sunshine Notes”: If you are aware of anyone in our Folksmarch community who is ill or bereaved, or is celebrating an event such as a Special anniversary, a significant birthday or retirement, please notify Elaine Mount by email leeelaine@twcny.rr.com or 668-7175.  Be sure to include an address for the person/s.  Cards have been made by Ruth Ware and are sent out by Elaine.

Folksmarch Advisory Committee Chair, Bruce Appel welcomes any comments and can be reached via email at: bappel@appelosborne.com
